Coat and Shoe Program
A lesser known program administered by the Old Newsboys is the coat and shoe program.
The Coat and Shoe /Boot Program that was launched almost 30 years ago, has had changes along the way to align with the here and now situation of our children in the community. However, it’s purpose to ensure that elementary children have the warm outer wear needed for frigid Michigan winters has not changed. K-6th grade children in most districts in Genesee County are still required to participate in outdoor recess.
If they do not have the proper outerwear, they are often kept indoors for safety purposes. This leaves children feeling targeted or different than their peers and it is no fault of their own. Having the necessary outerwear to keep warm and enjoy the social interaction with their peers is vital for a child's self -esteem.
The Old Newsboys of Flint provides new winter coats for children in Genesee County from K-8 th grade. In 2023, 583 children received a new winter coat from the Old Newsboys of Flint. The requirements for a child or children to receive a new coat from our coat and shoe/ boot program is that they are in K-8th grade and they did not receive services the prior year.
Due to limited quantities we can't serve every child who qualifies. To find out about getting a coat or certificate for a pair of shoes or boots for your child, please contact Old Newsboys at 810.744.1840.
Thank you for your support of this program.
